Timatanga Community School is a democratic, special character, state school based on play and child-led learning and discovery. The democratic approach empowers students by involving them in the decision-making processes of the school, including determining curriculum content and setting agreements for the daily running of the school.

In addition, Timatanga school offers a high level of parental involvement. It functions as a parent cooperative, in which parents volunteer at least one half day per week, as teachers, or supporting play, or helping in the functional running of the school.
