Timatanga Community School is a democratic, special character, state school based on play and child-led learning and discovery. The democratic approach empowers students by involving them in the decision-making processes of the school, including determining curriculum content and setting agreements for the daily running of the school.

In addition, Timatanga school offers a high level of parental involvement. It functions as a parent cooperative, in which parents volunteer at least one half day per week, as teachers, or supporting play, or helping in the functional running of the school.

NEWS

We have a new teaching Principal, to start term 1, 2025!

We are happy to announce the appointment of Allison Butcher, who will take over from Eve Tonkin as principal next year. Allison has over 15 years of experience as a primary school teacher, and she comes to us from Ako, where she was the principal until it sadly closed in 2023 (Ako was the only other democratic school in the Auckland area.)

Allison is  an open, honest, compassionate and flexible person who cares deeply about democratic education. She has the necessary patience and experience to safeguard the democratic processes that we have in our culture, from resolution circles to school meetings and we are all looking forward to collaborating with her.
